She doesn't reveal herself all at once. The face in this painting emerges the way a memory does — in fragments, in layers, some sharp and some dissolved into the texture of everything that came before. Kim Johnson has built this portrait the way Las Vegas itself is built: over the top of something older, something that refuses to fully disappear. Beneath the painted skin lie channels of symbol and code, labyrinthine markings that read like a language just beyond translation, the residue of a history the face carries but cannot speak aloud. The eyes are the exception. They are completely, almost shockingly present — blue and still and watching — anchoring the viewer in the midst of all that beautiful disintegration. This is Johnson's recurring fascination made visceral: the eye as witness, as the one organ that doesn't edit, doesn't forget, doesn't blur. Around them, the face is fractured into horizontal bands, the surface cracked and iridescent, streaked with the colors of oxidized metal and deep earth. A single ornate embellishment rests at the jaw like a relic pinned to the skin. To stand in front of this painting is to feel the particular tension Johnson lives in as an artist — the pull between what's visible and what's felt, between the face we present and the layered interior we carry. She doesn't resolve that tension. She frames it, holds it open, and invites you to sit with it.
