She doesn't reveal herself all at once. Kim Johnson has built this portrait the way Las Vegas itself is built: over the top of something older, something that refuses to fully disappear. Beneath the painted skin lie channels of symbol and code, labyrinthine markings that read like a language just beyond translation, the residue of a history the face carries but cannot speak aloud. The eyes are the exception. They are completely, almost shockingly present — blue and still and watching — anchoring the viewer in the midst of all that beautiful disintegration.
